What the built-in tools do well
Zoom and Teams annotation is already there and costs nothing. Several people can draw on the same shared screen at once, which is great for a quick brainstorm. In Teams it is powered by Microsoft Whiteboard and works when you share your whole screen.
Where they stop
They only draw on a shared screen, not on your camera. Drawing with a mouse is clumsy, so most people give up after one wobbly circle. And the annotation lives inside one meeting app, so it is gone when you switch from Zoom to Teams or Google Meet.
What Overlay Pen adds
With Overlay Pen you write by hand with Apple Pencil, on top of your camera, your slides or your screen share, and the drawing appears in any meeting app through the virtual camera of Ecamm Live or OBS. A 16:9 capture area on the iPad matches what the meeting sees, so nothing ends up outside the shot. The Zoom, Teams and Meet guide shows the setup, which takes a few minutes once. Questions
Can I draw on my own camera in Zoom?
Not with Zoom's annotation, which works on shared screens and whiteboards. With Overlay Pen and the virtual camera of Ecamm Live or OBS, you can draw on your camera picture.
Why can't I annotate in Teams?
Teams annotation only works when the presenter shares the whole screen, not a single window, and the presenter decides who may annotate.
Does Overlay Pen work in Google Meet?
Yes. Any meeting app that accepts a camera can show it, through the virtual camera of Ecamm Live or OBS.
Can participants draw with Overlay Pen?
No. Overlay Pen is a presenter's pen. For group scribbling, the built-in annotation is the better fit.
