Live telestration vs recorded analysis
Live means people watch while you draw: a halftime talk on a big screen, a coaching webinar, a stream. The drawing has to reach a screen or streaming app instantly. Recorded means you mark up a clip and send it to an athlete later. The tools are built for one or the other.
Overlay Pen
Open a match video from the camera roll and draw on it while it plays. The ink stays as the action runs and clears when you scrub to a new moment, so you never wipe by hand. Send the picture wirelessly to OBS or Ecamm Live, or by HDMI to a TV or projector. Six pen types, shapes and arrows. See sports video analysis.
Video Pencil
The most complete live option, with instant replay of a live camera (Action Replay) and a Soccer Toolkit with player tracking and pass arrows. Features are sold as separate add-ons. Compare with Overlay Pen.
Telestrator and Telestripe
Broadcast-style tools for productions that run on NDI. Strong when you already have vMix or a hardware switcher.
CoachNow Analyze
Built for coaches who record athletes, mark up the clips and share them. It is not designed to send a live drawing into a stream.
What happened to Coach's Eye?
TechSmith's Coach's Eye, once the classic iPad coaching app, was discontinued in 2022. Many coaches moved to CoachNow for recorded analysis, or to a live telestrator for team talks.
Questions
What is a telestrator?
A device or app that lets you draw on top of video, made famous by TV sports analysts. On iPad, Apple Pencil does the drawing.
Can I telestrate live into OBS or Ecamm Live?
Yes. Overlay Pen sends the ink as a web overlay with real transparency. Add it as a Browser Source in OBS or a Widget Overlay in Ecamm Live.
Do I need a subscription?
Not with Overlay Pen: the free version works with a small watermark, and Pro is available as a one-time purchase ($29.99) as well as yearly.
Was Coach's Eye discontinued?
Yes, in 2022.
